Residents can expect to see water and rates bills together in one combined notice from July 1 following the dissolution of water entity Allconnex.
Letters explaining the new arrangement have already been sent to residents but some have contacted the Leader seeking clarification over the timing of the last Allconnex bill and the first council water bill.
According to council, its investigations found that separate rates and water bills would cost an extra $380,000 each year for running, printing and distribution. This cost would have consequently been borne by ratepayers resulting in the decision to combine them.
With regard to the timing of the bills, council explained that water consumption charges are charged in arrears, and this will continue after July 1.
Ratepayers will be sent quarterly water access and sewerage charges along with their rate notices.
The July rates and water and sewerage notice will be issued to ratepayers in mid-July and payment will be due in August, with the water access period covering the July 1 to September 30 period and the consumption charges covering the period up to June next year.
“There will be a transition period as council resumes responsibility for reading meters for 95,000 properties across Logan,” a council spokeswoman said.
The final Allconnex Water bill will be circulated from May 22, 2012, and will include water consumption charges for approximately a 90-day period between December 2011 and April 2012. It also includes water and wastewater service charges for April to June 2012.
